چکیده

An uncontrolled used of antibiotics and sulphonamides is responsible for the presence of residues in beehive products and contributes to the problem of food safety. The optimisation of analytical methods for the detection of residues of antibacterial drugs (sulphonamides, SPs; tylosin, TL; streptomycin, ST) in honey was pursued and the methods applied to routine samples. ST was investigated by liquid chromatographic technique with a post column reaction and fluorimetric detection. SPs were quantified by HPLC equipped with fluorimetric detector and C8 column after a precolumn derivatisation by fluorescamine. The presence of TL residues in honey was confirmed by liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometric detection. Chromatographic separation of TL was performed on a C18 column. The validation parameters obtained with these methods were: 88%, 101% and 95-102% for recovery and 10 ng/g, 5 ng/g and 1 ng/g as quantification limits for ST, TL and SPs, respectively.

Antibiotic, Pesticide, and Microbial Contaminants of Honey: Human Health Hazards

Agricultural contamination with pesticides and antibiotics is a challenging problem that needs to be fully addressed. Bee products, such as honey, are widely consumed as food and medicine and their contamination may carry serious health hazards. Honey and other bee products are polluted by pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria and radioactive materials. Pesticide residues cause genetic mutations a...

RapidFire Mass Spectrometry with Enhanced Throughput as an Alternative to Liquid-Liquid Salt Assisted Extraction and LC/MS Analysis for Sulfonamides in Honey.

The use of veterinary drugs in honey bees for the prevention of infectious disease is ever increasing due to the spread of colony collapse disorder around the world. The United States Food and Drug Administration is concerned about the presence of these drugs residues in honey as they often lead to health concerns or potential antibiotic resistance. Currently there is a need for a rapid screeni...

Validation of an analytical methodology for determination of oxytetracycline and tetracycline residues in honey by HPLC with fluorescence detection.

An analytical method for the determination of OTC and TC residues in honey was developed. Sample treatment involves an extraction in EDTA-McIlvaine buffer, followed by a solid-phase cleanup step. With regard to the cleanup procedure, different SPE cartridges were evaluated and the results presented. The method was validated according to the guidelines laid down by the 2002/657/EC European Decis...

Multi-Residue Confirmation of Pesticides in Honey using Solid Supported Liquid Extraction

Several Belgian beekeepers were asked to shut down their hives due to withering of the hive. The cause of the withering was unknown. A multi-factoral study was initiated, which included a multi-class pesticide residue study from honey, to determine if pesticides were the cause of the decline. The extensive distribution of pesticides causes bees that have been fed on contaminated blossoms to tra...
